Even with the rise of modern technology and social media networking, some people are still left in a dark place not knowing how to cope or where to start. If there’s one important feature modern technology gave to mankind, it would probably be the improvement and innovation in social media networking, also known as the ability to stay connected to just about every single person from anywhere in the world through the World Wide Web.
These non-geeks don’t need to use complicated social network platforms, all they need are the basics. So what are considered as basic social media networks for the non-geeks? These would have to be: Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and WordPress.
Facebook
Although Facebook can be considered as a social media platform derived from the likes of MySpace and Friendster, it’s still considered as the best and most complete and most advanced social networking site available today. If there’s only one social media platform that non-geeks would want to be familiar with, it would have to be Facebook.
Although Facebook has become a lot more complicated now than it was two to three years ago when it started, more and more people still prefer having Facebook accounts to any other social network. Facebook is for those who want to be updated with the life of their family, friends, acquaintances, and so on. These life updates are done through wall-to-wall posts, photos, videos, live status updates, inbox messaging, live chat, online games, and many others.
Facebook isn’t just for people to stay connected with other people. Because of its mass popularity, Facebook has also become an avenue for businesses and brands to market their products and services and reach a larger market. Companies, artists, celebrities, groups, and other organizations can easily advertise on Facebook and more importantly, they can create their own page and all their “fans” have to do is to “like” their page and they would get instant updates about new releases, promotions, and any kind of update from their favorite brands, artists, and groups.
Signing up for a Facebook is very easy and all a person can ever need is an e-mail address. The starting point for any Facebook account is to manage the profile and start adding family, friends, and any other person in the world.
Twitter
Twitter is mainly for people on-the-go who wants live updates from anyone and anything in the world—from their friends, celebrities, companies, breaking news, and so on. In addition, these are also the people who want to share more than just one status update at a time and don’t need the other extra features that Facebook has to offer.
Twitter is basically just a live status update social media platform. It’s just like posting one status update after the other, whether you’re sharing to the world what you’re doing, or where you are, or what you’re eating, or even a random thought that popped in your mind—surely Twitter is the place for you. Connections on Facebook might not really appreciate so many status updates from one person, hence, the creation of Twitter. But instead of “friending” people just like on Facebook, Twitter has a more of a one-way relationship in the form of a “follower.” People have to “follow” each other in order to subscribe to their live status updates; however, it doesn’t mean that if you follow a certain someone, he/she automatically follows you back as well.
Tumblr
Tumblr is created for the “artsy fartsy” people of this generation. Tumblr is mainly a photo blog, however, songs, videos, and write-ups can also be done in this social media platform. Tumblr works similarly to how Twitter does it. Instead of live status updates from those you follow, there are photos, videos, and write-ups. The main difference of Tumblr and Facebook is that Tumblr lacks the other complicated features of Facebook. It’s only as simple as posting and reblogging and the end result is you get to have your personalized photo blog site.
WordPress
From the likes of LiveJournal and Blogspot, WordPress is the recent addition to the family of weblogs. WordPress is primarily an online diary, also known as a blog. More and more users have converted to WordPress because of its easy-to-use functions. Certain brands and companies have also used WordPress as an SEO medium. If you’re the type of person who’s comfortable in divulging your thoughts and other personal stuff by writing them and sharing it to the world, WordPress would be the best social media site for you. However, WordPress is just limited to blogging, and even though there’s also a “follow” option for other WordPress blog sites, it doesn’t have the same features as Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.
Tumblr and WordPress are considered as secondary social media networking sites as compared to Facebook and Twitter, both of which are leading the pack. It is up to the non-geeks to decide which social media networking site would work best to suit their needs.
